12:00 - 1:00 -- "Community, Collaboration and the Capital Campaign"

Join us for a presentation on knowing your strengths as an organization and leveraging the power of your communities to embark on that most daunting of development tasks: the capital campaign!

Our presenters from the Lincoln Children's Zoo -- Director of Development Kristine Lemons and Executive Director John Chapo -- will outline the pre-campaign planning steps and the campaign process to date for the Love Your Zoo Capital Campaign – and why CEO/President participation in the fundraising relationships at all levels is important.

Kristine Lemons started her full-time fundraising career 19 years ago, near Grand Island, Nebraska; although her mother would probably tell you she saw the signs of a budding passion much earlier while soliciting neighbors for MS readathon sponsors in the 1980’s! Even then, Kristine didn’t shrink from big goals, which might be one reason she’s a veteran of multiple capital campaigns. Her experience in higher education and religious nonprofits, took her to Maryland, Tennessee and Texas, but a family move back to Lincoln in nearly five years ago brought her most enjoyable challenge to date: the Love Your Zoo Capital Campaign. Kristine holds a B.S. in Business from Union College in Lincoln, NE and an MBA from West Texas A&M University and previously held the CFRE designation.

John Chapo has been involved in zoo work for 44 years, ever since he began as a teen volunteer at age 15 in his hometown zoo in South Bend, Indiana. John began his career as a volunteer zookeeper, moved into concessions and gifts, became a zookeeper while attending Indiana University and later became a lead zookeeper, educator and assistant director. He became one of the countries youngest zoo directors in 1984 at the age of 27.

John headed to Nebraska in 1986 to serve as the director and has enjoyed over 30 years of serving as the President/CEO of the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. He has an associate degree in business administration from Indiana University, a Bachelor of Science in Public and Environmental affairs also from Indiana University and he attended the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust summer school and received a certificate.

John currently serves as a Nebraska Tourism Commissioner. He is also very involved with the American Zoo & Aquarium Association, where he is Chair of the Membership Committee. John has and continues to serve on numerous professional and community organizations boards, tasks forces and committees, several in a leadership capacity.
